Pasadena City Hall Engagement Photos | An Editorial Session with Yvonne + Sam

Yvonne and Sam reached out to me with a clear vision for their session. They were drawn to Pasadena City Hall for its timeless architecture and wanted their photos to feel intimate, refined, and slightly more pose, something that leaned toward an editorial look while still feeling natural to them.

They shared that they weren’t looking for a fast-paced shoot, but rather a slower, more intentional experience where we could focus on creating images that felt composed, cinematic, and meaningful. At the same time, they wanted to make sure their photos would still feel genuine and connected, not overly staged.

One thing that stood out during our conversation was their attention to how their photos would be rendered, especially when it came to color. They asked if I had experience working with and color grading darker skin tones, which I really appreciated. It’s something I care deeply about, making sure tones are preserved with depth, warmth, and accuracy, without losing detail or natural richness in the process.

For their session, Pasadena City Hall felt like the perfect setting. The arches, symmetry, and soft light throughout the courtyard naturally lend themselves to a more editorial approach, while still allowing space for quieter, in-between moments to unfold.

Editorial Posing

Yvonne and Sam shared early on that they were drawn to a more editorial style, something that felt intentional, composed, and visually refined. Rather than focusing purely on candid movement, they wanted images that felt thoughtfully directed, with attention to posture, framing, and subtle details.

Editorial posing isn’t about being overly stiff or unnatural. Instead, it’s about creating structure within the frame, like small adjustments in how you stand, where your hands rest, or how you interact with each other can completely change the feeling of an image. Throughout the session, I gently guide these moments to feel calm and effortless, while still maintaining a sense of connection between the two of them.

Black & White Moments

As a photographer, I completely understand the love for color images, they feel true to the moment and capture the atmosphere exactly as it was. Most of the time, color works beautifully and brings a scene to life in a natural and familiar way.

At the same time, for something more editorial and artistic, I often find myself drawn to black and white for certain frames. By removing color, we’re able to focus purely on emotion, light, and form. It simplifies the image in a way that allows the connection between Yvonne and Sam to stand out more clearly, without distraction.

Feeling Camera Shy?

Introverted or a little awkward in front of the camera? That’s honestly how most couples feel for the first 20 minutes, so don’t worry too much, especially when you have a photographer there to guide you through it.

I always tell my couples that it’s okay to put that pressure on me. You don’t need to know what to do or how to pose. We’re not here to take perfect photos, we’re here to create images that feel like you.

Most couples naturally enjoy a mix of candid and more guided moments. Some parts of the session will feel relaxed and unposed, while others are a bit more intentional and refined. I gently adjust throughout the session based on how you’re feeling, so everything stays comfortable, natural, and true to who you are.
