Eagle Rock Hair Salon Branding Photoshoot with Jill, a Certified Trichologist | Los Angeles Branding Photographer
As a Pasadena branding photographer who works with creatives and service-based professionals all over Los Angeles, one of my favorite parts of this work is seeing how someone’s passion turns into visuals that actually feel like them. This salon branding shoot with Jill is the perfect example of that.
Jill is a stylist known for effortless, lived-in haircuts and color that grow out beautifully. She specializes in blondes, enhanced brunettes, short cuts, and natural texture. She is also a certified Trichologist and one of the few in the Eagle Rock area. Her focus is on both hair and scalp health so clients get long-term results, not just a good day-of style. She recently moved into a new private studio in Eagle Rock and reached out for updated branding photos for her website and social media. She wanted images that felt warm, welcoming, and true to the experience she creates for her clients.

My Process Before the Shoot

Conversation and planning
We always start with a call or email where I learn more about what they do and the kind of photos they’re hoping for. With Jill, this helped me understand her vision as a stylist and the feeling she wanted her photos to carry.
Creating the mood board
After the call, I put together a small mood board based on our conversation, her website, and the type of content she needs for Instagram, her newsletter, and other platforms. This gives us a shared visual direction before the shoot even begins.
Show don't tell
Before every session, I think about what props or elements can help tell your story. For service-based clients, I often suggest bringing tools you actually use or inviting a friend to act as a client so the photos feel natural and true to your real workflow. That’s exactly what Jill did.
The idea is simple: show, don’t just tell.
In a world full of stock images and AI-generated visuals, authenticity stands out. When your photos feel real, clients can immediately sense that and trust you more because of it.
Starting With the Space — Warm, Minimal, and Intentional
We started the session with simple environmental shots of her studio. The space feels peaceful the moment you walk in, intentional, cozy, and designed with care. I wanted that feeling to come through in the images.
For service-based businesses, especially in Los Angeles where most people find you online first, studio and workspace photos matter more than people realize. They instantly set the tone for the kind of experience your clients can expect.
Bringing in a Real Client — The Magic of Interaction Photos
One thing I always recommend to service-based clients is adding interaction shots. It helps future clients get a sense of what it actually feels like to work with you. Jill loved the idea and invited one of her past clients to join us, which worked perfectly.
This opened up a lot of visual storytelling opportunities. We captured wide shots of the studio while she worked. We added mid-range frames that showed her process. I took close-up detail shots that highlighted the hair, the tools, and the textures in her space. We photographed moments of her analyzing scalp and hair health. And of course, we included natural lifestyle portraits of Jill herself.
Since she is a Trichologist, I also made sure we highlighted what makes her unique. Her approach, the way she examines the scalp, the tools she uses, and the expertise she brings into each appointment all help her stand out in Eagle Rock, Pasadena, and the larger Los Angeles area.
Why Branding Sessions Are More Than Just Headshots
A lot of people come to me thinking a branding photoshoot is just a headshot. But once we talk, it becomes clear that most brands have a bigger story to tell. A headshot is great for your profile photo, but it is not enough to show your personality or what your business feels like.
Many entrepreneurs also do not love the idea of posing and staring into the camera. It can feel stiff and unnatural, and that is completely normal. This is why I take a more candid, documentary approach. Instead of constant posing, I photograph you the way your clients actually see you working. Using your tools, moving in your space, interacting with your setup, or simply doing everyday tasks that feel true to you.
These kinds of moments help future clients imagine what it is like to work with you, which builds trust long before they reach out.
Jill understood this right away, and her session felt relaxed, honest, and very true to who she is.
